AKEEP’s partnership with ACDD supports Full Life Ahead Camp
Last weekend from June 11th to June 13th, AKEEP staff volunteered for the Full Life Ahead Foundation Family Weekend. Full Life Ahead Foundation is a non-profit organization helping people with disAbilities live the most independent and productive life possible. The purpose of this weekend is to impact the lives of individuals with disabilities and their family by encouraging their dreams, networking with other families, and establishing an action plan.
For this summer camp, Irene, R&D Associate in Special Education, attended as an interpreter and Brittany, K-12 Outreach Coordinator, volunteered to be a 1:1 assistant for a Korean family. In the parent session, Irene sat next to Korean parents and made sure they understood correctly and helped them to get information for their child. In the teen program, Brittany assisted the Korean student with the activities and advocated her by communicating with peers and program leaders.
This was a great start of partnership between AKEEP and Full Life Ahead Foundation. With this informative and fun program from Full Life Ahead Foundation, AKEEP was able to help this Korean family access social services. To bridge the gap between Korea and Alabama, AKEEP will continue to provide language access to the community. Full Life Ahead is planning another family weekend in November and AKEEP will continue to provide language service. Let’s enjoy s’mores together this fall. If you are interested in this camp, please contact AKEEP at join@akeep.org.
