About this Event

Purpose of the exhibition:

Offering cultural diversity and enriching the appreciation of a significant Korean art form in the state of Alabama. This event provides an opportunity for residents to experience and learn new perspectives on both Korean art and culture.

The significance of Hanji to Korean Culture:

Hanji is a durable fibrous paper made from the inner bark of a mulberry tree. For over 1,000 years it has been a major part of Korean culture not merely as a paper, but also as a material for daily necessities. Traditionally, this craft was carried on by Korean men only, although in modern practices women are also trained in Hanji papermaking. However, since the invention of modern day paper its role as dwindled but it still remains as a value product for traditional Korean art.

Artist:

  • SuJoung Paek, is a Korean artist who runs a local art academy in Montgomery. She has exhibited her arts in several solo and group exhibitions . Hanji art was relatively new for her, but she has managed to translate her abundant artistic experience into creating beautiful Hanji artwork.

  • HyeKyong Yun, is a Korean hologram designer, who managed to translate her 3D hologram design experience into creating beautiful Hanji sculptures.

  • EunJoung Lee, loves creating art as a hobby and decided to challenge herself by participating in this exhibition as an assistant artist. Despite her lack of formal training, she mastered sculpting Hanji dolls on the job and greatly assisted the other artists.

Make N Take (Cultural Expression through Art)

Make N' Take Flyer.png

The theme of the Make N Take cultural arts event is cultural bridge building. As an organization, A-KEEP’s primary mission is to provide multicultural diversity education programs to the students and professionals of both Alabama and Korea.

Art is universal and relevant regardless of cultural background. It is also a wonderful way to express one’s culture pride and history. It is our hope that through this event we can use art to bridge cultural differences as well as educate members of the community about the cultures represented at this event. Attendees can also express their own culture through the different artistic mediums available at this event.

This event is created in partnership with A-KEEP’s Bridge of Unity in Diversity (BUD) Club. This youth leadership group focuses on educating the community about developmental disabilities. Not only is this event an opportunity to educate attendees about multicultural art, but it is also an opportunity for the BUD Club to educate the community about developmental disabilities.

We want families of and attendees with disabilities to participate in this event and be a part of educating those in attendance about disabilities through visibility. By being there, participating, learning, and being able to take the art they make home we hope all who are in attendance will leave with the ability to educate others about a culture and disabilities.

The Make n Take Arts Event is open only to children and their families, and is free.of charge.
